Mental well-being is part of a person’s overall health and well-being. It is a key resource and the result of many factors. The factors that promote mental well-being and those that undermine it vary throughout life.
Through the choices we make in our daily lives, we can strengthen our mental well-being. Constant routines, good relationships, meaningful activities, as well as enough sleep, a healthy diet and enjoyable exercise all increase mental well-being.
Mental health challenges are common, and almost everyone experiences them at some point in their lives. A crisis can temporarily shake one’s mental resources and give rise to different kinds of challenges, for example challenge in managing one’s emotions. Anxiety and worry are normal ways to react to stressful situations in life. If the challenges become prolonged, they can undermine mental health and may manifest themselves, for example, as excessive substance use, withdrawal or irritability.
If you’re worried about your own mental well-being or that of a loved one, it’s worth bringing it up. Often, sharing your worries with a loved one helps you get through the worst of it. Different kinds of self-care programmes support in taking care of your own mental well-being. If your mental resources weaken, it is important to seek help from a professional.
