Contact the emergency dental care if…
- you have strong pain in your teeth or jaws.
- your toothache has lasted more than two days.
- your jaws are swollen.
- it is difficult for you to open your mouth, or your mouth opens only a little.
- you have a fever and a toothache.
- you have had a serious accident and hurt your mouth or the area around your mouth.
- your tooth is sore, or it turns dark in colour.
- your tooth aches when you eat hot food or drink hot drinks.
- there is a bump in the gum next to the tooth, and it festers. This means it leaks clear fluid, blood, or pus.
Strong pain means the kind of pain that does not go away with painkillers. The pain might also make it difficult to eat or sleep. Serious accidents are for example:
- fractures in the mouth, jaw, or face area
- your tooth has fallen out or is moving
- other damage to the mouth or gums.
ArvFirst, estimate how serious the case is. Here you can find help in estimating how serious the case is and instructions for different situations. Follow the instructions.
Serious cases
In serious cases please contact the emergency dental care immediately. The contact information and opening hours of the emergency dental care can be found further down on this page.
The case is serious if…
- the tooth has completely fallen out
- the tooth has moved from its place.
Do this before you get to the emergency dental care:
- If the tooth has completely fallen out, put it in a glass of milk or hold it in your mouth. Do not clean the tooth!
- Do not wiggle the tooth if it has moved from its place!
- At the dental care it might be possible to put back the tooth that has fallen out
If it is a milk tooth and the situation is caused by an accident:
- If the milk tooth has moved, you can try to move it back into place.
- Contact the appointment service and information if the milk tooth has completely fallen out. During the appointment, we will estimate the need for treatment. The dentist cannot put back in a milk tooth that has fallen out.
Mild cases
The case is mild if a small piece of the tooth has chipped. It means a small part of it has been removed.
Contact the emergency dental care if…
- the edges of the tooth are sharp and cause wounds in the mouth
- the chipped tooth aches.
We smooth or fill sharp edges at the reception.
Contact the non-urgent dental care if you are not in pain.
