Cancer screenings
Tämän sivun sisältö
Screening means to detect a certain disease by analysing of large group of people. In cancer screenings we try to detect
- breast cancer
- cervical cancer
- bowel cancer.
We want to find cancer early, because then we can start treatment right away. Treatments will work better if we can start them in an early phase.
We do screenings every year for people of a certain age. The screening tests are free. You can go to the screenings tests if you want. You will automatically receive an invitation to a screening test if you belong to the age group being screened.
You can call a screening nurse if you have any questions. If the nurse does not answer when you call, please leave a message on the voicemail. The nurse will then call you back. Outside the phone times you can leave a message asking the screening nurse to call you back.

Breast cancer screening, or mammography
Mammography is a medical examination of breasts that is used to detect breast cancer. In the examination, the breasts are placed between two plates. After that, X-ray images are taken.
We invite women aged 50 to 69 to breast cancer screening tests. Women are invited to screening approximately every two years. The screening is carried out by Terveystalo. We do screenings alternately at different health centres within the wellbeing services county.
We will send you an invitation to a screening test if you belong to the age group being screened. In that case, a booking for the test has been made ready for you. You can change or cancel the booking if the time is not suitable for you.
Cancel or change the booking on Terveystalo’s website.

Bowel cancer screenings
We invite people aged 60 to 72 for cervical cancer screening tests. People in these age groups are invited to screening approximately every two years. You will be asked to give a stool specimen in the screening. We will analyse the sample for bowel cancer.
We will send you an invitation letter to a screening test if you belong to the age group being screened. With the letter you will receive a tube for a stool sample.
- Take a stool sample yourself at home.
- Follow the instructions in the letter when taking the sample.
- Put the sample in the sample envelope.
- Return the sample to a HUS laboratory.
- Drop the sample envelope in the return box in the laboratory.
- You can bring the sample to the laboratory without a booking.
You will receive a letter home if no bowel cancer was detected in the sample. In that case, we will stop the examinations. We will contact you personally if bowel cancer is found in the sample. You will then receive more instructions from the screening nurse. The screening is carried out by HUS laboratories.
